The Core Idea

Every task on this page follows the same principle: AI is a research assistant and drafting partner, not an author. We use it to generate leads, structure thinking, produce first drafts, and stress-test our work. We verify everything it produces. We never submit AI output without review, revision, and independent confirmation of factual claims.

This is not about replacing the intellectual work of legal scholarship. It is about removing the friction that slows that work down — the hours spent formatting bibliographies, the tedious first pass through survey data, the blank-page paralysis of a new syllabus. AI handles the scaffolding so we can focus on the substance.

Real-world example: Claude Code replicates and extends a published empirical paper

In January 2026, Stanford political economist Andy Hall gave Claude Code a single prompt: replicate and extend a published PNAS paper on vote-by-mail policy. With minimal human oversight and in under an hour, Claude Code downloaded the original replication data, reproduced the published estimates exactly, collected new data across three states for 2020-2024 with high accuracy, and ran the extended analysis — producing results nearly identical to an independent human replication.

An independent audit by UCLA PhD candidate Graham Straus also found real limitations: Claude missed some data for two states, produced lower-quality work when attempting novel analyses beyond the original methodology, and failed to keep adequate records of its decisions.

The study is not law-specific, but the workflow is directly relevant to empirical legal research: data collection, replication, difference-in-differences analysis, and robustness checks are standard tools in quantitative legal scholarship. The conclusion — that AI agents can dramatically accelerate structured empirical work but require expert oversight for anything beyond well-defined tasks — applies directly to the workflows on this page.

We use real examples drawn from legal academia. Every prompt is something you can paste into ChatGPT or Claude.ai today, with no setup beyond a paid subscription. Where Claude Code adds capabilities beyond what browser chatbots offer, we note that explicitly.

You do not need Claude Code to use most of what is on these pages. The literature reviews, syllabus design, exam drafting, grant writing, and student feedback pages all work entirely in browser-based chatbots. Empirical research is the one area where Claude Code adds significant capability — it can write and execute code against your data files.


A Note on Academic Integrity

We take seriously the question of when AI use is appropriate in academic work. Our position throughout this section:

  • AI-generated text is a draft, not a product. Everything requires human review, revision, and intellectual engagement before it becomes part of your scholarship, your syllabus, or your feedback to students.
  • Disclose AI use where your institution or journal requires it. Norms are evolving. When in doubt, disclose.
  • Never input student data into AI tools. This applies to names, IDs, grades, and any information that could identify a student. The Student Feedback page covers this in detail.
  • Verify all factual claims independently. AI models hallucinate citations, misstate holdings, and invent statistics. Verification is not optional.

These are not theoretical concerns. They are practical guardrails that protect your work, your students, and your institution.
